Most people think of sleep as something that starts when they get into bed, but your body begins preparing for the night much earlier.
As soon as the moment your evening meal goes into your stomach.
What happens when you eat late and heavily
Your digestion is an active process. Your stomach, intestines, and liver get to work as soon as food comes in. That takes energy, and energy means activity.
If you eat a heavy meal right before bed, you ask your body to do two things at once that work against each other. Sleeping and digesting. Your body has to choose, and that never works perfectly.
The result is that you sleep less deeply, wake up more often, and get out of bed in the morning feeling heavy, as if the night did nothing for you.
Thereβs one more thing. A full stomach presses against your diaphragm. That makes breathing harder, especially when you lie flat. Anyone who already tends to breathe through their mouth will notice this gets worse at night after a late heavy meal.
What sugar does before sleep
A quick sugar spike right before bed sends your blood sugar up. Your body responds with an insulin spike to process that sugar, and then? A blood sugar crash.
That crash wakes your body up. Not always fully awake, but enough to make your sleep lighter and raise your cortisol levels. Many people who wake up around three or four in the night have this as the cause without knowing it.
Chips, chocolate, a glass of wine with something sweet before bed. It feels relaxing, but it disrupts your night more than you think.
What does work
Eat your evening meal at least two to three hours before bed. Give your body time to finish most of the digestion before you go to sleep.
Choose proteins and healthy fats in the evening instead of lots of carbohydrates. Proteins and fats stabilize your blood sugar. They keep you feeling full without the sugar spike and crash that disrupt your night.
Still hungry right before bed? Choose something small and protein-rich. A handful of nuts, an egg, some Greek yogurt. No sweets, no chips, no large portions.
Stop eating after a certain time and stick to it. Not as a diet, but as a signal to your body that the day is over. Your digestion needs a rhythm, just like your sleep.
The habit for this week
Set a fixed time this week when you stop eating. Letβs say 20:00. What comes after that is water or nothing.
Seven days. See how you wake up compared with the week before.
